Introduction

The Department of Educational Foundations was established as a service unit in the Faculty of Technical & Science Education. It served mainly as a service department to the departments of Science and Technical Education and Business Education till 1998. Eighteen years after the establishment of the university, the Adult and Community Education Programme was created and housed in this unit. It was therefore made a full fledge department with a head. Apart from servicing the other departments, it now graduates its own students in the sub-discipline of Adult and Community Education which last for four years. Although, direct entry students are admitted to do a three year programme.

The department is also involved in the part-time programme administered by the University’s Centre for Continuous Education (CCE). It is a five (5) year programme, however candidates with appropriate qualifications as prescribed by the university are admitted into the programme for four years.

The department was established to train out community educators and teachers towards the development of the Nation. The department has full autonomy to operate as an academic department with a Head of Department that is responsible to the Dean of Faculty of Technical and Science Education. The department has made it by successfully graduating students who hold responsible positions in the society from the public sector to the organized private sector.

By the National Universities Commission rating the department has full accreditation of its courses as at 2007/2008 Session Assessment. For the period of its creation, the department has had the following experienced and dedicated academicians as heads of department in the following order:

2. DR. (MRS.) NJIOLE ANDAH - 2003 – 2005

3. DR. HILARY WORDU - 2005 – 2008
